What was so "novel" about the coronavirus?

As a virus, it was just extremely viral and caused some strange symptoms
like the loss/distortion of taste and smell

As an event, for many it was the biggest societal disruption since WW2,
and for a fleeting moment near the start there was a general feeling of
"welp, I guess this is how we're all going to die". The lockdowns were
also unprecedented, and led to some very unusual circumstances and
  experiences

I enjoyed wearing masks outside (´ー`)
