How were people translating foreign language text before google translate
came out? I was reading some archives of a forum from 2002 where someone
has made a post in some Balkan language, and someone had to come and
manually translate it to English

Babel Fish perhaps?

There were online language translation dictionaries and a few primi-
tive machine translation sites around (like AltaVista's Babel Fish as
mentioned), but translation dictionaries and language textbooks had
been around forever in book form, and software and handheld electronic
versions existed at that point too

Kind of an aside, but smartphones and the nu-web didn't bring us much
that we didn't already have by the early 2000s - they just consoli-
dated it all into a single device, and turned everything into dumbed-
down "mobile apps" and "web apps"

this post makes me feel old knowing that there are people that haven't experienced the old interwebz ( ´,_ゝ`)

Babel fish only has an handful of language options available... What if someone
made a post in a more obscure language, liek serbian for example?
Make a forum thread and hope someone would translate? (´~`)

I know about online dictionaries, but they don't help with the grammar (most important
part)

The idea that there are people that don't remember the 90s at all still
freaks me out, nevermind the 2000s. The worst part is I remember
reading threads a long time ago where people were saying the same thing
about the 70s and 80s, and now I've become those people (;´Д`)
