Oh yeah, his name is apparently matari (またり), and he represents 
relaxing/chilling out/taking it easy. Before ～2008, it's said that 
matari was far the most popular kaomoji on Ayashii World ヽ(´ー｀)ノ

I always see "(;´Д`)" CONSTANTLY. I wonder if this indicates a shift in
the public conscious （ ’～’）

Possibly, but it might also have something to do with ageing - most 
remaining Ayashii users are surely in their 40s-50s now (;´Д`)
