Today was my birthday (´人`)
Every year I play a sort of game where I see if I can get everyone to forget
that today is my birthday. Almost won this year, but a few hours ago my sister called my father to pass on salutations (;´Д`)
Some year, I'll surely win this game of mine...

The entering machines in public transportation in my city implemented loud
birthday celebratings few years ago. I, unaware of this, casually used my card
to get on bus, and the machine fukken screamed to everyone that it was my
birthday. During that day, I had to bear the embrassment several times
during my commuting. I have social phobia you know (´Д`)

Since that day, I always borrowed my dad's card during my birthdays...

トルコ... But I think it's unique to my city (´Д`)
At the time, I didn't even remember it was my birthday. I was just a barely
awake student trying get to his school. Worst part is the bus wasn't even
the only thing I was taking that day... I think the machine did the
thing like 4 times that day in total, each worse than the one before (;´Д`)

Make a list of them. It'll be hard but just fucking commit to it. Once
thats done, you are not allowed to work on more than one at a time. Go
through them one by one, and youll eventually get it done

I don't know about that, but did you ever see Remix? It's basically an
Ayashii World script where users can create "boards" (a single board
being essentially what we're posting on here) which would be assigned
to pre-existing categories. There's no "tree view", because that was a
relatively late addition to Ayashii scripts (around 2003), and Remix
predates that by 3~4 years

There's a live Remix instance in operation here if you want to see what
it looks like: http://www.strangeworld.ne.jp/remix/bbs.cgi

We did have our own "Heyuri Remix" for a while, which used a later but
lesser known version of the script that I had recovered and translated,
but it's currently out of operation (;´Д`) (you can find the transla-
ted version of the script here: https://github.com/Heyuri/HeyuriRemix )

there are over 20 textboard scripts. they are easy to write whether in bash or C or go or JS etc etc etc. the real question is, what novel feature do you plan to bring to the table in your board?

Can't access that live Remix instance.

Personally, I don't think there's much value in allowing people to make
their own boards. Maybe allowing a thread OP to moderate his own thread
could be a valuable experiment, but most smaller sites suffer from
having too many boards rather than too few.

Look at ayashii.net, just one big board and it works fine.

I intend to add the "view all comments", "view threads", "view trees"
similar to what Ayashii.net has. Site admin can pick a few tags and
users can optionally select one or more when making a new thread.

Try this instead:
https://web.archive.org/web/20220816125251/http://www.strangeworld.ne.jp/remix/bbs.cgi

They're "boards" in the same way Strange World is a board - they're
basically one big infinitely long thread/topic. Instead of tags, you
just give the "board" a title, and there is a view that shows all posts
from all "boards" in a single stream:
https://web.archive.org/web/20220816125427/http://www.strangeworld.ne.jp/remix/bbs.cgi?area=read&bgcolor=004040&custom=ffffff004040eeffeedddddd0&autolink=checked

There's no user board moderation, the admin is still responsible for
that

I checked all textboard engines from overscript list yesterday and they are either too old/oldish or just lack features which are brought by JavaScript and modern web dev. (E.g. SchemeBBS doesn't have cookies, which makes you think).

I've already polished and localized Kareha, but when it was finished, I stopped for a while to think: I probably don't want such an old script for my BBS.

Are the lack of Javascript and cookies a bug, or a feature ?

I would like to ask again what new features you want to bring to the
table, so to speak. Cookies to remember your name and email/link make
sense. What about things like giving the thread OP an option to enable
IDs in the thread?

As the author of the textboard article on Wikipedia and several
textboard scripts, my opinion is that tags have a lot to offer these
kinds of boards. Per-thread ATOM feeds, as well. I've also wondered
about how tripcodes (pseudo registration) could be expanded in the
modern age: maybe Oauth or PGP-based identities?

The nice thing about a tripcode is that it can be used on other sites
in this family of forums. The downsides is that they are easily
spoofed and not especially user friendly. Being able to post as an
off-site identity, eg your Twitter/Mastodon/email (opt in) has its
advantages.... while it was generally a failure, I still think 1chan
was notable in its approach to handling identities (every user has an
account, anonymous by default, checkbox to show "user" a la "CAPCODES")

I am not a fan of JS bloat, but I definitely appreciate when I can
click once/hover instead of typing everything by hand / open a new webpage.

I don't think that matters. Classic Kareha with sane JS UI 4chan features like post preview
by hovering the >>666 kind of link would work, as for me. There are literally no textboards
like that as far as I concerned.

But of course its backend should be more maintainable that Perl5 script from early 2000's.

Booru garbage? I don't like it, I never use those tags. And I think no one does,
at least on non-niche booru imageboards (like Neboard, probably the only one
I visit from time to time).

Also, you must be ashamed of yourself to write Wikipedia articles for free. ヽ(´ー`)ノ

How about forcing anonymity? Tripfags and other pseudonymous folx could go to twitter.

Ok, if you are asking about real novelties, I think I could create an Emacs client.
But it's also not a brand new feature, some guy already made it for SchemeBBS.

To be honest, I would better think of finding some good old format and
refresh it with modern web dev tech. Maybe, not even Kareha/2ch, but lost and forgotten.
I couldn't find anything more interesting yet, though.

Ok, nigger, but why wouldn't you do it on server-side? Simply insert \n every 60-80 chars
after some whitespace, when your PHP script compiles an HTML page.

If you want to see what a 2ch-type BBS with tons of kewl features looks
like - one that doesn't require a seperate browser/app to view/use the
extra features liek 2ch/5ch does - see open2ch: https://open2ch.net

(you can use this page to see the most active boards:
https://open2ch.net/dev/toukei/ )

They've got quotelink previews on hover and inline reply previews, but
those are probably the least interesting features of all. They've got
oekaki, images via embeds, a multiroom chatbox, polls, VoIP chat/stream-
ing, a way of registering users to prevent copycats including the abili-
ty to have an avatar, realtime thread rankings, advanced thread modera-
tion tools for thread makers that allow them to assign other posters as
mods or ban users from the thread, a map function, board creation, and
moar

It really makes the Western-invented term "textboard" sound kinda
stupid, doesn't it? ヽ(´ー`)ノ

Thanks for the links. This website restricts access for UA IPs for some
reason, I have to use VPN, lol.

From the first look, yeah, that's definitely not what Western people
define with the term "textboard". And not what I'd like to develop and
deploy.

My goals are:

1. Single-board text BBS with threads (Kareha-style).
2. Technobabble language for backend (e.g. Scheme Guile, but I also ask
   for your hipster advise).
3. Simple, but not simplistic design. Modern web dev techniques considered.
4. Comfy UI features from imageboards.

That's it. I don't think it would grow large, especially if I make it
localized in Ukrainian. (;´Д`)

In that case, couldn't you just take a modern imageboard script like
jschan, strip out or disable all the features you don't want, and then
customize it as you desire?

Imageboard has a different design. They are usually multi-board and numerate
each post per board. It looks like a basic feature, I need to rewrite the core
to change than. Then why not just it from ground-up in a wierd language? I think
I'd have some fun.

So let's get back to my original question: I was just asking about weird /
unpopular languages, which I could with no problem apply to web backend.

Do you know any? I've already tried Ruby, but Ruby is too slow.

The design really isn't that different between most 2ch-type BBS
scripts and Futaba-style imageboard scripts, especially due to the
latter having adopted many features of the former (sage, tripcodes, cap-
codes, etc) - it's just a matter of per-thread logs VS per-board logs/
a database for the most part, and the rest is all just aesthetics and
configs (which are easily modifiable)

Hell, kokonotsuba is a Futaba-type imageboard script that can emulate
the appearance of a 2ch-type board, and kareha is a 2ch-type script
that can emulate the appearance of an imageboard - not to mention that
tons of Japanese BBS scripts include an imageboard mode (such as the
script we're posting on rite now! ヽ(´ー`)ノ)

Per-board post numbers don't seem like a big issue to me unless ur goal
is to perfectly replicate 2ch - which honestly it doesn't sound to me
like it is. The only reason Amezou (and by extension, 2ch) was ever
like that in the first place was cuz they nigger rigged a system where
each thread was designated a seperate log file that would be viewed
with a modified version of MiniBBS in a very crude attempt to seperate
threads from the board index (thus making threads with many replies
more viable)

And while jschan does have multiboard features and an 8chan-like board
creation and management system built-in (which can be disabled), being
multiboard is nearly always entirely optional when it comes to these
kinds of scripts - in fact, the majority of them are only designed to
be a single board, and if you want multiple boards then you have to
manually set up multiple instances of the script and make your own home-
page/menu to link them all together (;^Д^)

For fun, nigger, for fun.

Egotist objectives are the only objectives that matter.

Yesterday I played with Guile webserver module and was
able to create POST request, but I'm stuck since Guile
webserver can't run some useful scripts (like writing
POST content to file/database), only provide response.
Actually it can run a simple script and webserver will
output an error, but I can't combine response (like
redirect) and script (like writing to file/database).

I will probably look for other solutions; maybe, Chez
Scheme has more mature webserver module.

Is PHP that good? Why does it have so bad reputation?

The general opinion is that it was a very popular and initially not
very good language that was easy to get poorly-written and half-assed
code kinda/sorta working, leading to a lot of n00bs and amateur program-
mers putting out a lot of bad code/advice/resources that never got
checked or replaced, leading to a lot of serious vulnerabilities and
problems across the web, leading to a bad reputation (;´Д`)

A lot of this is said to have been solved over the years, particularly
with PHP7, but there's still a lot of sites using old and slow versions
of PHP and amateur code written a decade or two ago... あ。(;゚∇゚)

From my experience, PHP 7 is rather fast within web, faster than some
Python or moreover Ruby.

I saw 8.1 came out. Should I use it if I decide to develop my BBS with
PHP?

What's the issue? If it's the colors maybe I can attempt making an accessibility
theme.
I guess the font can also be hard to read in long term. If you are familiar with
browser extensions and okay with not seeing the AA posted here properly, maybe
you can use stylus and set body's font to something easier to read
here is an example:
.msgnormal, body, footer {
font-family: arial;
}
Arial because imo it's the easiest font to read

The problem with Arial is that it makes everything look Serious Busi-
ness and sucks the LOLs out of everything (;´Д`)

A better substitute would be a monospaced font - particularly Japanese
monospace fonts, as they will retain nearly all Ayashii AA compatibil-
ity (except for showing ー without the little uptick on the left that
makes it look liek a smile on MS Gothic)

If you have Win10/11 and have "Japanese Supplemental Fonts" installed,
you'll get BIZ UDGothic - it's a nice monospaced Japanese font that
doesn't use bitmaps

speaking about os-tan wiki being down, there used to be a link on
their forum to an archive of the whole os-tan gallery or something
like that when the site was in danger of closing down iirc, but they
removed that download later. Would be pretty cool if someone had that saved. (´¬`)

I don't know about that, but you can find other os-tan collections on

Oh 10538352chan? It's already closed due to CP, spam, raids, the admin
being busy with school/work and losing interest, unfixable bugs in the
software, the users revolting against a rogue mod, and losing their
hosting / domain registrar / DDoS protection (;´Д`)

One day, one of these sites will go beyond merely copying old youtube's
interface, and actually attempt to revive the "this is a social network
for teens and adults to make kewl videos and vlogs to each other over
the internet" concept instead of just being a wasteland of stolen
youtube videos and failed attempts at humor by child-aged and child-
brained furfags and brony dipshits with more pronouns than brain cells

he described vidlii exactly, I get more interaction on some of my videos
on vidlii than i do on youtube. It is seriously the best video sharing
website and lets me express myself more than youtube because I can upload
stuff that would get my channel fucked on youtube.

Sites like Heyuri are less about copying any particular time period, and more about rejecting the
degradation the Internet has suffered since around 2007 and everything associated with it, which
tends to bring the culture back to that period by default.

> what about a sit that looks like its from the mid 2000s instead of copying from the mid 2000s?

Aesthetics are important, but they're fairly superficial - the culture
and content are far more important, but those things are a lot more
difficult to bring about unless you're specifically making a site about
[old topic that anyone younger than XX isn't interested in]

With any serious attempt to recreate/recapture the spirit of a certain
time period, people who were too young to have experienced it first
hand will always be unable to fully comprehend or adapt to it, and just
end up annoying and driving off those who were around for it

That's why for any topic that young people might be interested in, we
have to settle for all these crappy "looks old but feels underageb&"
sites instead of something that truly feels like it's a portal to
another time period (;´Д`)

Vidlii still has the SPIRIT of old youtube though, that is the point.
It isn't about the UI, though the old yt layout is objectively better.
The videos on the site may not all 100% be ~2007 culture exclusively
but the spirit of the site is still the same, it is place where
anyone can upload anything, mostly stupid shit for fun. No one on
vidlii is making $ off of doing it like modern yt. Vidlii isn't an
all seeing overreaching system like google is that is tied into
everything. Vidlii doesn't remove your video for using certain MUSIC
Or for talking shit, or talking about certain topics that the
"influencers" of our realm have deemed taboo like not being gay.
Vidlii isn't hiding results from my search, and tags actually mean
something.

Look at bitchute, another youtube alternative but something that
is NOT made in the spirit of old youtube, pretty much 99% of the
videos there are loser nerd wanna be political talking heads who
just make videos complaining and nothing productive. Now look at the
vidlii home page and wow look new unique videos? and stuff that is
familiar to me, someone who was on yt back then? Also lots of drama
and shit talking? this is EXACTLY like youtube use to be.

Just because some users are not old enough to have used youtube when
it was like vidlii doesn't matter. These new users are making new
shit in the same spirit of the old website. I DOUBT that you were
using japanese only bbs sites in the early 90s yet here you are,
on a site that is a modern recreation of an early 90s jp bbs.
You don't have the same culture as they did. You don't know the
inside jokes and ways of speaking that they had in their culture.
And most people don't even know what the spirit of those early
sites were or their intended purpose, yet here we are on a
recreation of those sites making our own shit with a mix of what
we do know about their original culture and some of our own
(thank god for rule 8 tho)

PS I was using vidlii years before lolwut SAVED the site, and the
ONLY people that have a problem with it are suffering from kuz
derangement syndrome since he dares to provide hosting. The only
real problem with vidlii is the mass uploaded SEO bot videos about
like lawncare and shit.

In fact lolwut himself describes the spirit of old youtube
and how vidlii is re creating it PERFECTLY on his website:

people talk about how the Y2K aesthetic looks cool but tbh i think early 2010 easthtic looks cool also

if i ever learn to code a video sharing site,i would probably make a 2016 youtube revival mostly made to make fun of the people that think mid 2010 was "old internet"

I wasn't referring specifically to vidlii, and I definitely wasn't
referring to Heyuri, but if you want to talk about vidlii then I'll
inform you that vidlii doesn't have a single ounce of the spirit that
old youtube had, AT ALL (;´Д`)

I was on youtube since the second half of 2005, and in 2005-2006 the
site mostly consisted of the following things:

- ordinary people aged 16-30 vlogging to each other or discussing news
and pop culture from their bedrooms
- ordinary people aged 16-30 recording themselves performing various
musical covers and performances in their bedrooms
- ordinary people aged 16-30 recording themselves performing various
  comedy skits in their bedrooms
- ordinary people aged 16-30 making cool/funny remixes/mashups/
  machinima/stop-motion animations/etc. in their bedrooms
- ordinary people aged 16-30 writing comments that were - at times -
brutally honest and insulting, but not completely off-topic non-sequi-
turs that are trying too hard to be funny, nor treating youtube like
  it's /b/ or /s4s/
- the kinds of candid home videos that would previously have been found
on the likes of America's Funniest Home Videos
- tons of movies/TV shows/music videos/etc. stolen from elsewhere that
would usually get taken down before long

There were many things that fell outside of those categories as youtube
was always a large, multifaceted website, but the vast majority of what
most people were using youtube for at that time was as I described

What it definitely wasn't was spastic children making intentionally low
quality videos - there was the YTP fad from late 2006 to around 2008
when it died down, and the MLG fad around 2012-2014, but those were
relatively small niches and weren't at all reflective of youtube as a
whole. Plus, some of those were actually funny (back then anyway)

Although youtube wasn't anywhere near as limited in terms of FREDDUMS
OF SPECH as it is today, youtube (and virtually every other site on the
internet) was significantly less "boundary-pushing" than it became in
later years, and it was always a far cry from the likes of 4chan - and
even 4chan back then didn't cultivate the kinds of low quality garbage
that vidlii mostly houses today

The closest thing vidlii has to old youtube content is videos that have
been stolen from youtube, or reuploaded from youtube as a backup by
people who are primarily based on youtube. In terms of the old youtube
culture (which could be summarized as being a typical early-mid 2000s
social network where most people are there to meet and interact with
new people from around the world and make new friends), vidlii and all
the other "old youtube" clones never have anything of the sort

Instead they just have a small group of mentally retarded children
making ironically shitty, post-ironically shitty, and unironically
shitty videos to an audience of no one. Oh, and monkey torture pr0n I
guess... (;´Д`)

Regarding Ayashii World, boards like this started in 1997 and their
"heyday" continued to around 2003. This board isn't trying to emulate
or recreate that time period/culture as much as it looks to it for
inspiration, and it fully intends to do and be its own thing (much like
the rest of Heyuri). Vidlii on the other hand is trying to "emulate, as
much as is reasonably possible, the overall experience of 2000s
YouTube" according to lolwut's own words, and in my opinion it fails
miserably at it (through no fault of anyone running the site)

I've dug around the videos section and searched for stuff plenty of
times - whenever I've checked it's never been anything like I described
old youtube as being unless it's an actual old youtube video, or is
a video mirrored by someone who primarily uploads to youtube and only
uses vidlii as a failsafe (and there's not even that many of those).
Instead, it's mostly how I described vidlii as being - CRAP!

What's funny is that I was even going to say "this video by kuz is just
about the only thing on vidlii that's reminiscent of old youtube:
https://www.vidlii.com/watch?v=XIxben5XeBs ", but what do I discover?

...that it was fukken uploaded to youtube in 2008:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwPDETH2Bn8

Where the hell are all the cute girls vlogging into their webcams about
the things on their mind? Where are the plethora of awesome music
covers by talented amateur musicians? Where are the hilarious comedy
sketches by a couple of dudes in their bedroom/dorm? Where are the epic
remixes and song parodies? Where's the amateur music videos for some-
one's favorite show/movie that they spent ages passionately working on?
Where is literally anything that's akin to the kind of stuff that was
actually on youtube during the early years?

NOWHERE, that's where. It's 99% just lame "day 1 in a video editor"
garbage made by 12 year olds with nu-web brain rot who think "shit
video" = "funneh". Well it doesn't. They SUCK, shit SUX, and it's
nothing at all like old youtube unless your entire experience with
"old youtube" is some shitty YTPs and TF2 videos from 2009 or whatever

Sorry to get all "faganon", but it's only cuz you fags keep going on
about how vidlii is "just liek teh old youtubes!", when in reality it's
absolutely nothing like it - at least not beyond the interface. I'd
love a site like old youtube to exist today, but nothing has managed to
even remotely capture it - and I doubt anything ever will (;´Д`)

so because someone puts their OC on both it is bad and isn't part of vidlii?
btw many of the most popular vids on old youtube were reuploads from other
much older sites, or people mirroring their own stuff to youtube.

Again you are missing the point of the website being in the spirit of old yt
Not every video needs to be a carbon copy of the same themes and styles of
the oddly specific years you personally have in ur head.
Considering how small the userbase of vidlii is, no shit your super specific
favorite video style is harder to find there. Yet, there are still unique
examples of this on vidlii.

Where are YOUR videos bitch?

this pretty much describes every other vid on old youtube...
Also making an intentionally "shit video" as you say requires quite a lot
more skill than "1 day in an editor" you don't make vids tho so you
wouldn't know this

> nothing at all like old youtube unless your entire experience with

YTP was already a well established art form in 2006, But that style of video
PRE DATES youtube itself. Also previously you praised machinima videos but
now you are bad mouthing tf2 machinima? Machinima ALSO pre dates youtube.

MY video? It's here, courtesy of kaguya-san ヽ(´ー`)ノ
https://www.vidlii.com/watch?v=zekNlzoD8gS

I had a bunch of videos on youtube back in the day, but that channel is
long gone and now there's maybe only a couple of remixes and other
stuff I made many years ago that others have either uploaded on my
behalf or reuploaded by themselves

There was always plenty of stuff from other sites on youtube, but the
thing that set youtube apart from all its shortlived competitors (that
also had all that same stuff from other sites on them) was youtube's
homegrown material and culture. And it wasn't good simply because it
was homegrown - it was homegrown and AWESOME, felt a lot more personal,
and made many people want to keep revisiting and contributing to the
site for moar

I'm not sure how I can explain it so you get it, but youtube was like a
social network where the whole point was to "broadcast yourself" and
interact with others through the medium of video (whether that was a
public audience, another youtuber via video response, or to some indivi-
dual privately). This wasn't a "super specific favorite video style" -
it was the main purpose and function of the website, and primarily what
the site consisted of

Yes lonelygirl15 was "fake", but the whole reason that saga worked in
the first place was because it took the most popular format on the site
(thus blending in perfectly and even getting popular before all teh
craziness kicked in), and then became a massive phenomenon when the
cults and kidnappings or whatever were introduced. But those early lone-
lygirl15 videos (when they were still playing it straight) are perfect-
ly representative of what a huge component of old youtube was actually
like

Niconico was the same. It wasn't all crazy animations and stuff - it
was predominantly ordinary people talking and performing into webcams
and microphones in their bedrooms. Vidlii doesn't have that - it has
(who I can only presume are) very young kids making very shit videos to
the extent that anything else is practically unfindable on the site

And they're not shit because "they're actually liek super talented and
doing it for teh art reasons" - it's because they're talentless idiots
who are clearly incapable of making anything better. It's exactly the
sort of thing that isn't even allowed on Heyuri because it breaks the
rule we have to stop cretins from shitting this place up with trash
that ruins the internet - even if it's post-post-post-post-post-ironic

I'm not talking about "oddly specific years" either - "old youtube"
is the period from its launch in 2005, somewhat before Google bought
the site in 2006, and definitely before it became massively mainstream
and started deviating from its original form around 2008-2009. You can
call the 2008-2012 years or whatever old if you want, but it's not what
anyone besides n00bs refer to as "old youtube"

Now STFU, this conversation is too long (;´Д`)

I eat 2 per day, and there was only 1 day recently where I only had 1

...I've had 57 bananas in August (;゚Д゚)

There are two things when browsing modern retro sites that tend to turn me off. You're right that a lot of the sites that LOOK old at a first glance, but are just superficial copies made by people in middle school (I'm glad they're taking an interest in the old web, but I feel like they miss the point - Y2k style is cool and all, but come on). That takes me out of it pretty quickly.

The other thing, actually, tends to be more common in people our age. They'll make a pretty good site that's mainly in line with things from the time, but it'll be infected with modern political garbage. Even just a hint of it would turn me off - and it doesn't matter which side. Modern political discourse is such a toxic waste dump that it takes over people's brains like a parasite. That's why bitchute will never, ever be a good website.

Yeah, that second part is a good point too - it's a good reminder that
no generation is free from people who majorly suck (;´Д`)

I think the sad reality is that most of "our generation" (assuming
you're around the same age as me) are mostly only active on facebook
and twitter these days, and are too busy with their careers/kids/etc.
to be messing around in the kinds of places they frequented in their
teens. Meanwhile the few who do have the time and inclination to fuck
around on the web have largely become raging sociopolitic-obsessed
lunatics (;´Д`)

How ``long term" do people really spend browsing ayashii world tho? Most people probably just do a quick scroll through the recent tweets, do some drive-by posting, and pop out

Here u go ヽ(´ー`)ノ:
http://www.css-designsample.com/csstemplate/index.html

It shouldn't come as a surprise that they're very "mid 2000s - early
2010s", and are not responsive, HTML5-compliant, etc.

That does come with the benefit(?) that they will display correctly in
much older browsers, if ur into that
