They aren't very similar, beyond involving synthesizers (;^Д^)
Trance is a very "euphoria"-driven form of House/Techno-derived club-
oriented dance music going back to the 90s. It's uptempo and all about
having lengthy breakdowns and buildups, blaring plucky & arpeggiated
synths/hypersaws, and is very "hands-in-the-air"

"Synthwave" is a modern internet-derived genre that is designed for
listening to (as opposed to dancing to) first and foremost. It's more
downtempo and inspired by late 70s and early 80s analog synthesizer-
based music - particularly the likes of Synthpop, Italo Disco, and sci-
fi soundtracks
