Waha and Azumanga Daioh GIFs were pre-4chan, and all that type of stuff
was mostly inherited (see: stolen) from Futaba circa 2003 via ADTRW's
infatuation with the place
Not sure when exactly demotivational posters originated (late 90s?
early 00s?), but they predated 4chan and were a very tired and outdated
format by 2006 (unbeknownst to n00bs everywhere)
Cockmongler, pedobear, 4chan party van, happy negro, emo duck, sageman/
bumpchan, NO U, etc etc etc. were all 2004, and nearly all the first
half of 2004. WRYYYYYYYYYY slightly predated 4chan, but was posted all
the time from the moment the site existed
I remember Lazytown GIFs being a big thing in 2005, but it may have
started earlier. O RLY was also one of the big things in 2005, as was
fgsfds, lol internet, roxbury guys edits, etc. This is when a lot of
4chan, YTMND, etc. material started being spread out to the rest of the
web, and you started seeing it on every forum even if nobody knew where
it all originated
I don't remember exactly when it came out, but the "original" 4chan
city was entirely about memes and events from 2004-2005 so it probably
was probably made in late 05 or early 06. IIRC the sequel was more
about DESU vs Gaston, habbo raids, etc. which was all mid-to-late 2006
and into 2007, so it was probably 2007 or late 06 at the earliest
Raids and all the "we are legion" shit started gaining traction in
2005, but it was 2006 (largely thanks to Shii's influence over moot and
the foundations of "Anonymous" culture) when it went out of control,
took on a life of its own, and began spreading far beyond the confines
of /b/ and 4chan
2006 was really the watershed moment where 4chan developed a high level
of popularity with 13-16 year olds via sites like ED, and a high level
of notoriety across the rest of the web as being a site filled with
jackasses and mindless trolls (a reputation which naturally attracted
more of those things). Prior to this, 4chan was relatively obscure, and
those who knew of it knew it as "that funny anime site with lots of
photoshops, pr0ns, and weird Japanese shit"
