this place has a wonderful aesthetic
it definitely does feel like something out of a dream

there was that bit just mentioned where the original incarnation of ayashii

I'm not sure if ur aware, but the board software we're using here is a
real Ayashii World software that can be traced back to the late 90s,
and has continued development into current times. It's not something
Heyuri made (besides translation and the kaomoji buttons), or some kind
of replica - it's teh real deal! ヽ(´ー`)ノ

Going back to 1996-1997, Ayashii World originally just used whatever
background color the free service they were using had. When they
switched to actually installing the board software themselves in Sept
1997, they mostly used #007f7f. This was in line with the general
aesthetics of Windows 95, Netscape, and many other things of the era

In May 1998, Shiba changed the background color to #004040, which was
initially controversial but quickly mass-adopted. This is what we're
using now, and what the majority of Ayashii World-type sites have used
since (although there are other branches with different colors -
Honten, Nazo, etc.). It's often described in Ayashii texts as being
like a blackboard ヽ(´ー`)ノ

Thanks for the info about line breaks, I will follow suit!
In the dream I had, it was the year 10000 AD and the world had become
unlivable. Instead, all of humanity seemed to live in these bubble
cities at the bottom of the deepest parts of the ocean. But there were
also some kinds of cars that drove on the seafloor and a person waiting
at the gate of the city to let us in. We were riding in one of these
underwater taxi things and approaching the city. The guard looked like a
military guy. He had some kind of small apparatus in front of his mouth
that seemed to allow him to breathe underwater. We were all wearing them
in fact, so even though we were underwater we didn't have to wear diving
suits or anything. I'm not sure why the cities were in bubbles in that
case, but it might have had something to do with the other most
memorable part of the dream: the giant squids. In the distance, there
were HUGE squids. Like giant squids, but way larger than even the
largest of those... they were the size of jumbo jets at least.

Anyway, it was one of the most memorable dreams I ever had. I find it
frustrating because I know there were several other "glimpses" into the
future of different dates in that dream, but the only one I remember was
10000 AD, which was seemingly the final one.

sounds neat
I can't remember any of my cool dreams when I want to, and when you get
up (really, anything that moves your lower body at all), it completely
goes away.

having the bubbles over the city could also be for defense in depth, so
you could still breathe while inside if your breather unit thingy failed

that's a fucking cool dream ヽ(´∇`)ノ
i had one too that involved an apocalypse-type scenario
i "woke" up in a boat full of people and one of them was fat and dressed like a native american, he injected
us with some red liquid and then we disembarked on a tiny, sandy island. Basically all of humanity lived in
these tiny islands because the world was flooded and they were connected to each other by large and
extremely long stone bridges.
The main problem was that the islands were small and not fertile so we all relied on looting old shipwrecks
and to do so they sent a few selected people to search shipswrecks.
I and a few others were given suits just in case and started looting a floating shipwreck but then a black dragon
emerged and threw me underwater, the suit was heavy and so i sunk like a rock, thankfully i didn't need it because
the red liquid i was injected with allowed me (i assumed) to breathe underwater.
I reached the bottom, looked up and saw the shadow of the dragon coming at me at an ALARMING speed, tried
to move out of the way but then......
i woke up from the dream (´ー`)

11965. Shiba interview   User: Anonymous   Post date: 2024/06/03(Mon) 06:33:48
A small interview with Shiba (founder of Ayashii World) about his
thoughts on the Internet, circa 1998 (shortly before he quit Ayashii):
https://web.archive.org/web/19981206130852/http://www.hotwired.co.jp/matrix/9808/textonly/question/shiba.html

Google translate:

Q.1 What were you doing on the Internet in 1995? Please be as specific
as possible. If you were not using the Internet, please tell us when
you started.

In 1995, I downloaded strange underground tools and viruses. I was
still mainly using PC communication. In 1995, people were just starting
to leave NiftyServe, so BBSs and homepages were still interesting. I
started using the Internet seriously in the summer of 1996. And around
that time, I started a web page.

Q2. What are you doing on the Internet now? Please be as specific as
possible about the content of any projects you may have.

I run a web page called "Strange World," which is mainly a bulletin
board. It is underground to the general public, but not to those in the
know, so it could be called the "gateway to the underground."
Currently, it is mainly current events and inside jokes, but basically
anything goes. The principle is that those who post and those who read
are responsible for their own actions.

Q3. Has your attitude towards the Internet changed between 1995 and
now? If so, how has it changed? Or, if not, in what ways do you think
it remains the same?

I thought it would be good for the Internet to be a free and
unrestricted space, but the reality has been different. In terms of
legal regulations, it is difficult to know what is illegal and what is
legal. There must be many people who are caught without even realizing
that they are illegal. I also think that we are becoming in a horrible
situation where even things that are not illegal are being regulated in
the name of "self-regulation" to escape regulations by the authorities.
On the other hand, as more people are using the Internet, the advantage
has emerged of being able to share local information, rumors, and word-
of-mouth information on a national level. Information is being
distributed at a different level than the mass media, which act as if
they are providing all information even though they can only provide
limited information. In other words, in an information-saturated
society, it is now possible to select and discard information without
being manipulated by the mass media. I think the future of the Internet
can be found there.

Q4. Three years from now it will be 2001. Please predict the state of
the Internet in 2001 as much as possible based on your own experience.

It is certain that the number of ordinary people (those who are not
particularly knowledgeable about the Internet) will increase, so there
will be more problems like those occurring in the real world. This will
be a new type of problem with elements unique to the Internet added to
it. Elements unique to the Internet include partial anonymity and the
ease and convenience of taking action. It is expected that criminals
will become younger and younger in particular. On the other hand, as
commercial use of the Internet advances, the Internet will likely
become increasingly "clean" on the surface. It will likely move in the
direction of not only eliminating illegal things, but also "foreign
objects." Once the Internet is cleaned up and only used for commercial
purposes and broadcasting, it will be over. It will not be interesting
if it becomes the same as magazines and television. However, time flows
on the Internet several dozen times faster than in the real world, so
it is difficult to predict what will happen three years from now.

It had a seperate BBS for Hakoniwa too
I see there was a war between Udori Island and Manko Island, and a drama

There were also some people getting tired of having no read goal in the

My IRC client of choice is Hexchat.
But either way, every channel I used to go in disappeared in favor of Discord,
or they have an IRC bridge for the old holdouts and 90% of users are on Discord
and 99% of all replies in the channel are via Discord. IRC is dead as a platform,
unless you get very lucky. It's not like there's literally no one using it, just
go on the biggest channels on the more popular servers, but activity has cratered
compared to how things were even ten years ago, which would have been long after
when IRC was a more widespread chat system.

I dropped completely out of a lot of communities since the crowd changed with the
software changes, and I ended up one of the last active users connecting via IRC.
It's fucking bullshit and I hate it.

that's true. A lot of these IM protocols suffer from teh fact that a lot
of their clients sux and try to tack on shit. Matrix especially
suffers from this, even their flagship client Element doesn't support

i looked for communities on tor hoping to see something cool but they
are either dead or exactly the same as the clearweb but with the addition
of scammers (´~`), though that might just be me not looking hard enough
i went to the trouble of getting in some sort of forum (can't remember the

the problem with Tor isn't really a problem with itself (aside from slow
speeds), it's that most ppl aren't going to jump thru hoops to use your
site by installing a special browser. But there are sum kewl things on
there, keep looking!

Ah, I see.

That's about it. It's gotten a bit long, and the definition is like
    "basic knowledge of modern terminology."

Of course, there is no intention to belittle people who use modems, but
rather it is a word against the media. The difference between "n" and
"so" clearly expresses the feeling that "what is reported is similar to
the Internet, but it is different," because of the huge difference
between the use/management of the Internet that we are familiar with and
have struggled with, and the way it is reported.

Clever. ( ^ω^)

Disable auto-wrapping in the textarea too, and make the text area a bit
taller by default.
Disabling the auto-wrap would make it immediately obvious to the poster
that their text is too wide.

Something like:
<textarea wrap="off" rows="25" cols="74" name="v" accesskey="4"
maxlength="10000" placeholder="" title="Alt(+Shift)+4" id="contents1">

'wrap' isn't a valid property in html5 but fuck that shit, every browser
supports it and has done so forever.
I think the correct modern way is with
white-space: pre;
in the CSS attached to the textarea, but that naturally doesn't work in
non-CSS browsers (which might reasonably be using ayashii, it is
inherently a web1.0 place). ヽ(´∇`)ノ

Teh issue with VMs, PC emulators, etc. is that they always come with a
certain degree of latency (sometimes a significant amount), as well as
inconsistent frame and input timing

It's not so bad for slow-paced RPGs and strategy games, but
action/shooter games are made far less enjoyable (;´Д`)

Worse still is that Win9x-era hardware is now stupidly expensive to buy
second hand... it saddens me that my okaasan threw away our Win95 PC

I think it only only accepts "del" requests from actual users, and
there needs to be a lot of them before a post is deleted - in fact I
think it reveals the host/IP on all that user's posts before the post
gets deleted

It's a kewl autonomous moderation feature though, in addition to (if
I'm not getting it mixed up with other sites) OPs having the ability to

ID is presumably the same thing we have on Site Discussion and that
many other sites have - a hash consisting of alphanumeric characters
generated from the user's host/IP, usually with a per-thread seed (so
it's different in each thread, but remains the same within a thread)

I believe OPs can choose to enable ID display when creating threads too

It's not IDs, but hosts and parts of their IP.
you can see all threads here has it: https://jun.2chan.net/junbi/futaba.htm
Kokonotsuba also has that feature, but it's not decide-able... for now.
Maybe I will make an issue about it ( ´ω`)

There was a point when I realized that everything I liked was
underground through no intention of my own, and I kinda hate it, lmao.
ヽ(´∩`)ノ

Even if the light of the mainstream is radioactive and mutagenic to that
which stands under its rays, it would mean I'd be able to talk about the
shit I like with people.

Some of it is underground in a "lol you fucking enjoy ____" way, while
some of it is underground in a "I've never heard of ____" way, some of
it is "I know of ____ but it's too hardcore for me", some of it (a lot
of it) used to not be underground but it's not hip anymore, and some of
it is just not being able to discuss eromanga with people (this one is
fair, you can't talk about your hypnosis incest megane loli hentai with
anyone in real life).

The music I listen to is ancient/never was aboveground in any capacity,
I watch kodomo anime and shoujo shows more than anything vs anything
like what Crunchyroll is pushing these days. The games I play are either
incredibly old, incredibly niche, or both. The shit I watch on YouTube...
some of it is hyper-mainstream, but not much. I don't watch any streamers
or anything.

Some of it is me abandoning various forms of mainstream media, whether
it be that I end up thinking it sucks, or because it's just like kinda
depressing/infuriating. I don't watch broadcast TV at all and haven't in
15 years. I don't have a streaming subscription service that I use. I
dropped several major social media sites because the algorithm went
insane and stopped putting anything I actually wanted to see in front of
me in favor of bullshit designed to elicit a response.

Even in the underground, I'm feel a bit too underground. I dropped 4chan
after realizing that no one left actually wanted to talk about anything.
I stayed on for years longer than I probably should have because there
were pockets where I could still talk about things. They're not 100% gone,
but they're gone enough that it just isn't worth the effort.

I guess I still watch mainstream movies sometimes? Did anyone else see
The Menu? That shit was great. I try to go to the theater to watch movies
but the theater closest to me closed down, the next closest one is
increasingly run down, the one close to where my friend lives is alright
but that's far as shit, and the one close to the Round 1 arcade I visit
sucks so we still have to drive to a different theater. (´Д`)

It's not all bad (again, the light of the mainstream alters whatever
stands beneath it in hideous, twisted ways), and in some ways, I feel
smug as hell about it... but it's rough being quite this disconnected
from things. ┐(゚~゚)┌

I feel the same way
-The most 'mainstream' stuff in my music collection is long forgotten
techno from the 90s like Technotronic
-The only books I read are literature reviews like 'Against
Interpretation' or conspiracy shit that literally makes people angry
when I bring it up,like about how musicians in the 60s were likely
frauds with ties to the military industrial complex.

-The last movie I watched was an Italian one from the 70s that was a
great allegory about people who refuse to grow up and let things go
(Maladolescenza)-- except I can't talk to anyone about it because it
mostly features kids traipsing around the woods and having sex in caves
-Ive never enjoyed video games. I keep trying but they bore me dead, so
that's another thing I can't talk about.

Damn. I'm practically standing in the sun here versus your underground
level. (⌒∇⌒ゞ)
...but even still, it doesn't change the fact that it would be nice to
have some non-niche interests. Doesn't matter how deep you go if being
barely below the surface and near the Earth's core are treated with the
same disinterest to the public at large. ( ´ω`;)

2K and XP are based on NT, which do not involve DOS in their operation
at all. These systems use the NTVDM, a very restricted virtualization
environment for running DOS programs.
XP is a bit heavier than 2K, but they actually heavily improved DOS
support because it was targeted to people moving from Windows versions
that booted themselves from DOS. The VDM used in 95/98/ME is
significantly less restricted than the NTVDM and has much more access to
hardware (fun fact: technically, it doesn't depend on the system being
booted from DOS, it is virtualized since Windows kicks DOS out during
the boot process... but Windows 9X also spends a bunch of time
pretending it's still DOS with 32-bit code instead of old 16-bit DOS
code, and running DOS programs are allowed by Windows to access hardware
directly for the most part).

Basically, if you want to run DOS games and Windows stuff, run 95 if you
can (MUCH lighter than 98, lol at driver support though), 98 if you
can't (98SE adds a bunch of shit like USB and a bunch of other drivers).

That being said, if you're running old Windows programs only, even
16-bit Windows programs, use 2000. It is faster than XP.
Fun shit too -- 95, 98, and ME can't run programs for Windows before
3.0. There aren't many Windows 1/2 programs, but they exist.
ALL 32-bit x86 Windows NT releases, including 32-bit Windows 10, can run
Windows 1 and 2 programs.

also, I think the quote pushed the line length too long so I got rid of
it

No, but it's kind of hard to find in decent quality with subs. I tracked

I went to Round1 to play some Beatmania IIDX, and it was hyper
crowded... (`~´)
I ended up going to the movies shortly after instead to see Furiosa
(very good, if not as impressive as Fury Road was, it's a bit flawed but
not enough to complain too much).

The nice 120hz Lightning Model cabinet (running IIDX 31) was down due to
a monitor issue so they dug out an ancient 60hz one running IIDX 26
while it was out of order and like... seriously, the fuck? There's an
offline version of 29, where did they find this thing? (´¬`)

Also, IIDX spent like 17 years or some shit without a headphone jack,
pre-Lightning Model cabs don't have one and that's insane. You could
barely hear the cab over everything in the area, even with effects on to
make the cab louder.. (´人`)

Also, my timing was shit because I couldn't hear shit and I think this
version doesn't have live fast/slow display, I think that's a newer feature
(which is also nuts lmao). ( ´ω`)

As I remember they simulated it about as much as a typical adult sex
scene in a fairly explicit adult movie, which is going quite far, if
there are kids involved. I mean, the film itself even opens with a shot
of the young male character lying in bed on his back, completely naked.
There's no clever censorship or anything, you can just see his little
weiner (´∇`)σ

That's how I've always done too. Get 4 squares of toilet paper, fold it

E-rotic is great fun. I know them almost entirely because of DDR and StepManiax.

I dunno about the whole world, but DDR totally started being a lot lamer when they stopped
with all of the eurodance licenses. It's not just better music, it's outright perfect
for the game. Doujin/Vocaloid/Touhou licenses and in-house tunes are cheaper probably, or
involve less hassle, but fuck (I like all three of those things, but setlists NEED more
proper dance tunes. (´ー`)

...shit. I lied, there are like 61k images here. (゚ー゚)
I just got home and actually checked how much was in the folder. It's
not 100% unsorted, but...
It's rough. It's mostly unsorted. I'll probably never finish, but oh

with time i think i will be able to name them all, i have the unique problem where i don't know how to classify some
of them because some of them could fit in 2 or more folders (for example i have a folder for reactions and a folder for
funny stuff and some cat pictures could fit in both)
also i found out i had partially sorted them ages ago so i have a bunch of folders that i have to empty out and re-sort
because they are not descriptive enough (i have a "cool stuff" folder that contains OC, random funny yt videos and
even flash animations) (´ー`)

nothing I have is classified like that into folders, it's way too much
effort
although if you're HARDCORE (and on Linux), you could symlink files into
those folders, so you have one copy of the file showing up in two
folders

sorting files like that would be more important on Linux too since I
don't know of any Linux file manager that deals with like tens of
thousands of files in a folder that well, they ALL suck compared to
Windows Explorer lol

but on Windows, genuinely don't bother lmao ヽ(´∇`)ノ

I am also in a similar conundrum. Most images I manage to categorize
into different folders (one of them is a massive wallpaper folder), but
I usually throw unsorted stuff into the default Saved Images, or leave
them to rot in my Downloads.
It's lazy, but one of these days I'll get around to sorting them out.
...Eventually

But once every thousand years, the cum slowly dries up, throwing the Age
of Semen into chaos... Mindless hollowed husks roam the earth in search
of any sperm, dragons gone mad from the lack of free-flowing cum that
once kept their lust in check, power-hungry gods defy the will of the
heavens and hoard more semen for themselves...
Only you, the Chosen Inbred, hold the power to refresh the supply... or
let it evaporate and usher in a new Age of Afterglow...

do eetttt.... i finally got around to sorting through my thousands of
files and deleting all of the duplicates i had. it took me a couple
weeks on
and off of working through them, but eventually i got through it and it
feels so good to have my stuff organized and (mostly) named now. it was
a grueling, miserable process, but worth it. pop some music on and it
might help it go by more smoothly.

i know where everything is and can find what i need with minimal effort,
and it's all in "one place" so i don't have to plug in my externals and
go through a bunch of unsorted folders fumbling about helplessly trying
to find what i'm looking for. by "one place" i don't mean in one folder,
but my files aren't all scattered about haphazardly anymore.

threw together a script to help
pictures with the same character in it, I throw into a folder and add a
prefix with the script to whatever their existing filename was, then I
put them back
would keep them in separate folders but it is MUCH more convenient to
browse through them in one big folder, at least on Windows
I really need to find a Linux file manager that doesn't eat shit on a
folder with this many items, and I am MUCH too lazy to write my own lmao

Yeah, I've heard negative things. As far as Firefox forks
go, LibreWolf is a little extreme for some things I wanted
to stay remain (like the dark mode on my search engine)
and I heard bad things about Pale Moon's performance and
management decisions, which is too bad because the aesthetic
is nice. Maybe Waterfox or GNU IceCat someday, but Firefox
is serving me fine at the moment.

A lot of Firefox derivatives are just older versions with backported
updates and different default settings (sometimes not even privacy-
beneficial ones) - you can get most of the effect by simply going
through Firefox's settings menus once (;^Д^)

so i decided to make my own, got into the rabbithole and ended up reading about something called
DOM which has references to tons of pseudocode and concepts... very complicated stuff i think
i managed to write code that creates a tree out of a (basic) html file but i'm totally lost on how to
render everything on screen (゚ー゚)
not to mention the code is pretty ugly (´ー`)

It's a kind of awareness of the nature of things induced by the sudden wipe of desire
from the mind. It is the closest thing to enlightenment and sagehood that most average,
normal people experience, which is why the Japanese call it 賢者タイム (sage time). The
ideal is to learn to be in a constant state of 賢者タイム. But at the same time, desires and
passions are part of what make us human and give us depth in my opinion. (`ー´人)

Hello Ayashiis, this is a friend on your sister site gikopoi.com
Two weekends ago I cooked up a wiki service @ wiki.gikopoi.com

Since this is in-house homebrew software, any suggestions on features
to add? We have a partial todo list: https://wiki.gikopoi.com/w/ToDo
As this is meant to be a minimalist project I can't think of many more
things it "needs" to be "complete"

Unlike https://wiki.heyuri.net/ this is not intended to be a formal
wiki on any topic, whether Heyuri, imageboards, or otherwise -- though
if your wiki topics are relating to *board or otaku culture , great
Another key difference is that we are a registration-free wikiwiki cloan
rather than a registration-dependent MediaWiki service.

We have articles for specific SJIS characters, as well as a "choose your
own adventure" game with ~30 events so far (let's keep going!) and random
topics like Japanese food and pipesmoking.

Public domain software. Pages will get thrown into a git "eventually"
